A proper leg-stretcher of a circular that starts and finishes in the heart of Farnley Tyas, so the car can stay at home.
Head south out of the village and climb gently onto the tops, where the route reaches its highest point at around 280 metres and the views open out for miles. From here the way undulates along the ridge before dropping into Thurstonland, our neighbouring hilltop village, with its own church and a welcome bench or two.
The middle of the walk is the big descent: a long, steady drop towards Storthes Hall and the valley floor at around 140 metres, green and quiet, with a brook to cross at the bottom. Then comes the sting in the tail, the pull back up to Farnley Tyas, with around 225 metres (about 740 feet) of climbing over the whole loop, most of it saved for the way home.
Just under six miles in all. Allow two and a half to three hours with a few stops to take in the view and get your breath back. Stout boots are wise after rain, as the field paths and the valley sections can get properly muddy.
